7/5/2023 0 Comments Dauntless epic games![]() Each of Dauntless' six weapon types feel unique and powerful, with slots for items called cells that you can use to upgrade and customize them to your tastes. It’s a system that rewards commitment and, refreshingly, it doesn’t punish you for not spending money on Dauntless' optional (and primarily cosmetic) microtransactions. ![]() The higher your mastery level is the better gear you can make, the better upgrades you can unlock, and so on. The more you use a type of weapon or slay a type of beast the higher your Mastery rank increases in that specific field. “Beyond crafting better equipment, there are Mastery levels as a form of progression. Instead of being a source of lore-heavy dialogue, every NPC in Dauntless is either a vendor or questgiver in the hub town, so when you’re not customizing things in menus you’re out in the wild chopping off tails, dodging fireballs, and slaying enormous beasts. Then again, storytelling has never been the selling point in other games in this genre (such as Monster Hunter itself or God Eater) so it’s hard to say I miss it very much. The lack of a real story beyond inconsequential blocks of text at the beginning and end of missions that foster little empathy was a bummer at first, but I quickly forgot about it. That’s it – slaying is basically all you do. While it can lack the depth that arises from that complexity, Dauntless’s streamlined approach offers something else that more than makes up for it.The hook is simple: you’re a slayer, and you slay big, nasty monsters called behemoths. It takes most of the best parts of Capcom's iconic franchise and redeploys them in a way that's accessible and fun with a whole lot less baggage. Don’t worry if you don’t have any friends to play with, the game has matchmaking, allowing you to find people to team up with no matter what Behemoth you are looking to take down.If you stripped Monster Hunter down to its core components and redesigned it as a free-to-play (but not pay-to-win), online-only game, you'd get something very close to Dauntless. The game runs slow and laggy in the social area, which is common in these types of games-especially being cross-platform-but the game runs perfect once you are in match. The story is generic and forgettable and adds nothing to the experience. ![]() Similar style and color pallet, which makes sense being an Epic Games product. The art style itself works well with the fantasy setting. Since it’s free, there’s no cost to pay, although I’ve yet to see if it’s the dreaded pay-to-win in the later stages of the game. Combine that with cross-platform play and a serviceable crafting system and it has all the trappings to be worth your time to check it out. There is a lot of depth in both the varying weapon styles and the Bemouths themselves. The game really shines when it comes to combat which is genuinely fun. They may have you wear certain amour, cut parts off the monster before killing it, and lots of other goals to work towards. These involve many different specific tasks to complete while fighting monster. There are quests and mastery logs to complete as well. This is the carrot-on-the-stick to keep you playing, constantly wanting to upgrade and create even better and more fantastic gear in an ongoing quest to defeat all the Bemouths. The second core mechanic is the crafting, where players return to the Realmgate (a friendly social area) to turn that freshly acquired material from defeated beasts into stronger weapons, armor and supplies. Instead you only fight against huge Bemouths, taking time and strategy to defeat. You won’t be fighting little slimes and inconsequential enemies like that in this game. ![]() The monsters themselves all have different staggering stages and different body part pieces that can be cut off to give players more experience and crafting materials. The depth here is that each weapon type in the game has different move sets and abilities, offering varying gameplay styles and tactics. The first is the combat where you fight against the large monsters. There are two main game systems at play here. The core gameplay entails players, called Slayers, banding together to defeat large Behemoth monsters. Released on all current gen systems, the game has cross-platform play, allowing anyone on any console/system to play with each other. In short: it's a free third-person action RPG multiplayer game. ![]()
